In the News
As a general rule, Hometown Sounds prefers to highlight upcoming events, rather than write about cool stuff you might have missed. But these first two articles were timely when they were published last week, so anyway here we go. First up is the CityPaper’s feature on Massie’s EP release show at the Black Cat. And here’s that EP Grady Says Serotonin for 13 minutes of listening pleasure.
Next up is this District Fray piece on Listen Local First’s final Down in the Reeds Festival.
Chris Kelly at WaPo chats with April + VISTA about Slipping Into Color, their new collaborative EP with Little Dragon.
Finally, Washingtonian Magazine profiles world class harmonicist Frédéric Yonnet and his contribution to the score of Martin Scorese’s new film Killers of the Flower Moon.
DC Music Video
Superabundance is the duo of producers Jackson Ryland, also of Rush Plus, and Future Times label chief Max D, who has too many aliases to enumerate. Following up on their 2021 self-titled full-length album, the pair are back with 11 cuts of improvised techno and atmospheric d&b held together under the title Extrasolar. The song “Perplexion” inspired the multi-talented Max D to create this accompanying music video animation that looks a bit like an AI trying to generate black & white logos for something and never quite nailing it. Bandcamp is the spot to grab this album on vinyl while supplies last.
Don’t Stay Home This Week
Wednesday October 18th
Nashville-style songwriter Lauren Calve, formerly of the Americana-band Run Come See, plays songs from her newly released album Shift with her full band at DC9 Wednesday evening, with support from Orlando singer Cat Ridgeway.
Thursday October 19th
DC9’s Thursday night lineup features non-binary musical comedian Paul Moonshine, of the folk-rock group Cecil & Delilah, along with psychedelic grunge band Argo and the Violent Queens and the insanely catchy Dr. Horsedoctor.
Friday October 20th
We are very happy to report that, after a few quiet years, the Luce Unplugged series of free live performances inside the Smithsonian American Art Museum and hosted by the WashingtonCityPaper (and us, briefly!) is back on the calendar. Friday’s show from 6-8 PM features R&B singer Jru Anthony and dream pop star Ari Voxx and the Sad Lads.
Saturday October 21st
Experimental DIY venue Rhizome gets into spooky season with the two-day Spectral Performance Art Festival this weekend. Each day features an outdoor market and free indoor performances from 1-6, while the evening programs from 6-10 requires sliding-scale payment tickets. Saturday’s lineup includes music from Frederick MD’s Switchblade Porter, Té, Buko Buko, Visitors, and lots more genre-defying performances.
Sunday October 22nd
80s-style synthpop is so compelling in a live setting, and hybrid SF/DC band 2DCAT are one of the finest acts at this craft. They headline a night of retro synthwave at The Passenger Sunday night that also features SafetyBear and Karneaux.
