In the News
As part of the 50th anniversary of hip-hop, NPR Music showcase some of the big name talent from the DMV and VA Beach including Wale, Diamond District, and GoldLink.
Steve Kiviat and Alona Wartofsky at CityPaper pen a lovely tribute to photographer and musician Charles Steck who recently passed away in June.
CityPaper also published this feature of upcoming 8 piece hip-hop group 242.
District Fray [subscription required] list out 11 DC music venues, and also 7 places to see jazz. We admit we were not yet familiar with Focus Social Club, Mayflower Club + Zebbie’s Garden and Sachi, so thanks DF!
DC Music Video
Producer Jarrett “Suburban Hermit” Nicolay aka My New Mixtape, also of the duo Astra Via with Olivia Mancini, just released a new single and music video for playlists. “Long Distance 1970” is a lush, gorgeous groover embodying a phone conversation between two friends discussing the events of that calendar year. If the woman in the video looks familiar, let us congratulate you on recognizing DC to FL transplant Brittany Jean of the synth duo Wall of Trophies.
Don’t Stay Home This Week
Monday July 24th
Fort Reno’s communal dessert fest Night of a Thousand Cakes comes this Monday night. And in case you’re not into cake, there’s three distinct flavors of punk rock on stage with Old Knife, Kinda Evil, and Dot Dash.
Tuesday July 25th
“Dark Americana” songwriter Annie Stokes pulls her July tour up to the Hard Rock Cafe Tuesday evening for a generous set of solo live music from 5-8 PM. And because the HRC event page links to Stokes’s DC Dream Day feature in the Post, so will we.
Wednesday July 26th
Your weekly dose of mind expansion comes Wednesday night at Rhizome with electronic and computer music professor Heather Stebbins and Natalie Chami aka TALsounds supporting Brooklyn chamber folk project Mutual Benefit.
Thursday July 27th
Can’t stop/won’t stop recommending the Fort Reno shows, becuase they really are a DC summertime treasure. Thursday’s lineup features classic rock band Java Sparorw, anarchist punks Trash Boat and the Ambush (what a name!), and power-pop from Cinema Hearts.
Friday July 28th
After selling out the Pie Shop for their EP release a few months ago, songwriter Jason Cannata’s band Wandering Bird headlines The Runaway on Friday night and they’re bringing along bilingual folk singer Liah Pérez and funky jam band Doug.
Saturday July 29th
We predict the expansive lawn from front to back at Wolf Trap to be absolutely crankin’ Saturday night for the Go-Go Explosion of Big Tony & Trouble Funk, Be’la Dona and Black Alley.
Sunday July 30th
Justin Trawick’s long running songwriter showcase The 9 is a great way to hear a wide variety of talent. Sunday night’s lineup at Pearl Street Warehouse includes Jess Eliot Myhre of the Bumper Jacksons, Ryan Walker of The Beanstalk Library, David Kitchen of The Cahoots, and (exactly 5) more.
