Arlington Magazine compiles a list of 63 DC area musicians they are feeling right now. It’s a pretty decent list, and includes quite a few of our faves. But one memorable act that’s missing…

… is Griefcat! The duo of Annie Nardolilli and Louisa Hall craft delightfully lighthearted folk tunes about unexpected and taboo subjects. One of their 2023 singles “Revolution! Tuesday June 6th
Joe Herrera has contributed his trumpet performance to many DC area acts, including two we remain fans of, The Funk Ark and The Harry Bells. Tuesday evening Herrera gathers his jazz friends for two sets at Blues Alley at 7 and 9 PM.
Wednesday June 7th
Summer’s arrival means the MLK Library Rooftop showcases are finally back. The DC Punk Archive’s monthly show kicks off Wednesday night with ripping sets from Teen Mortgage, Grady and Fantazma. The free show starts at 6:30 and this roof fills up fast, so grab dinner to-go and bring it along.
Thursday June 8th
As a former beauty pageant competitor, Caroline Weinroth understands captivating audiences through performance in a way totally unique to her. She leads her power-pop band Cinema Hearts at Songbyrd Thursday night along with a new band featuring singer Shady Rose of Lightmare called Endlings and perpetually touring entertainers North By North.
Friday June 9th
We can’t write this up any better than Brassie herself: “Come hang out for my dumb birthday and last headlining residency show at Little Penn Coffeehouse! Griefcat will be performing as well as Veronneau (as a duo). Plus my wonderful mother is bringing cupcakes and I’ll be hilariously spiraling about getting older. Hope to see ya there!” Music starts Friday night at 7!
Saturday June 10th
As is tradition that surely shall never change, on the second Saturday in June Takoma Park’s avant-garde hotspot Rhizome hosts the annual Seventh Stanine Festival, which is NOT the seventh iteration of a festival called Stanine but instead refers to “Stanine (STAndard NINE), a method of scaling test scores on a nine-point standard scale with a mean of five and a standard deviation of two”. Conceived and programmed by indie pop band The Caribbean in association with the audio program Essential Tremors, this year’s lineup includes DC acts Bushmeat Sound, Poem-Cees, Devin Ocampo of The Effects and Beauty Pill, and Boat Burning, with DJ sets from Matt Cohen, PJ Brownlee of the cool new record shop Art Sound Language, and journalist/author Marcus J. Moore.
Sunday June 11th
In celebration of Black Music Month, the MLK Library welcomes go-go acts to their magnificent rooftop space every Sunday afternoon in June. The legendary “wickedest band alive” Rare Essence plays this Sunday at 1:30 PM, and hopefully the building survives that much bounce.
