The Week In DC Music Feb. 6-12
Welcome back to our new email newsletter. This week we’ve got a quick roundup of some news stories, tips on some collectible vinyl releases, and picks for live music (almost) every night of the week. Hang on tight.
In the News
Friend to us and all of DC music Bryce Taylor Rudow over at The Worthwhiler posted his annual roundup of The 51 Best Songs to Come Out of the 51st State in the Past 365 Days. Along with the expected Spotify playlist, Rudow provides commentary on his choices and the state of the music scene here. Well worth the read, and nice to see some of our podcast features in his roundup.
WaPo’s Mark Jenkins reviews the new album Maryland House by The Crystal Casino Band.
Sidney Thomas at Washington City Paper provides a comprehensive obit for DC rap pioneer Black Indian.
New Vinyl Releases
As of this writing, less than 60 vinyl copies remain for sale of Blue Period, the remaster and expansion of Beauty Pill’s 2003-2004 releases You Are Right To Be Afraid and The Unsustainable Lifestyle. These will sell out, so let’s help them on their way, shall we?
Dischord Records has new limited edition colored vinyl releases from Hammered Hulls, Jawbox, Faith, and Lungfish.
Don’t Stay Home This Week
Tuesday Feb. 7
Power rock trio Grady made some inspired picks for guest spots on their monthly residency at DC9. Joining them this Tuesday is Pinkhouse, recently featured in our podcast, and Moozy.
Wednesday Feb. 8
In addition to their longtime home at Comet Ping Pong, Rediscover Fire Booking is now curating shows at the Quarry House Tavern in Silver Spring. Wednesday night the focus is on songwriting with headliner Mol Sullivan from Cincinnati joined by DC openers Brassie and Adrian Leclaire.
Thursday Feb. 9
The Runaway is the spot for up & coming DC talent on Thursday night with music from Talk To Your neighbor, featured on our latest podcast episode, along with Oilers and Higher Numbers, hosted by DC comedian Kyle Cromer.
Friday Feb. 10
Union Market’s Songbyrd is one of the few venues left in DC with a great balance between local and national acts on their calendar. Friday night is your chance to catch feminist punks Bacchae and newcomers Big Cry Country along with Baltimore queer noise act BLKVAPOR.
Saturday Feb. 11
Well well, hello again Big Cry Country, and what’s up Runaway. It’s Saturday night, and we can warmly recommend headliner Cinema Hearts, joined by BCC and NJ indie punk band Well Wisher.
Sunday Feb. 12
Here’s something very different from the punk/indie/rock vibes above. Sunday afternoon at 3 PM, DC “hot jazz” band Swingology hosts a set of their gypsy jazz repertoire preceding an open jam session in Meeting Room 1 of the West End Library.
